League of Legends: Dominion - Review

Today RiotGames launched the long awaited new gameplay mode Dominion for their MOBA League of Legends. As with the other gameplay mode, Dominion pits two teams of five against each, however in this mode in order to destroy your opponents Nexus, players must conquer and hold points on the map. Hold the points longer than your opponent and your team will be victorious.

Dominion mode takes place on a new map called Crystal Scar, which is basically a large circle with 5 control points along its perimeter and multiple paths cut though the center. Each team begins the map with 500 Nexus points and as you gain control of the hold points your opponent will slowly start to lose their Nexus points. The first team to hit zero loses.

Dominion starts off with players already at level 3 and with double the cash, so right from the get go you can tell this is a much faster gameplay style than the original game mode. Kills don’t matter and aren’t even displayed until the match is over, which I’m assuming is done so players don’t concentrate as much on champion kills as holding points.

Once the game begins both teams rush out to conquer their two nearest hold points with a fifth hold point in the middle at the top of the circle. When you conquer a point, 3 minions will spawn in both directions to help you attack the other hold points. You also gain a lot of XP and money by conquering points so leveling and being able to purchase high-end items from the shop happens much faster.

To keep up with the faster gameplay style, Dominion features buff zones throughout the map that will increase a players run speed, provide a temporary shield or heal them.  There are two speed buffs within the circle to help players escape attackers or to run across the map faster. Their’s also a shield buff in the center of the map, one of each team. Once the shield has been picked up by a teammate you’ll need to wait a min or so for it to respawn. Then near every hold point there’s a health zone which will heal a player for certain amount of points, not a ton, but enough to be helpful. Like the shield, once picked up, you’ll need to wait a min or so for it to respawn.

The buffs around the map definitely speed up the gameplay as you don’t need to return to base quite as often as before to heal. For me, the buffs also gave me more incentive to take risks in attacking other players since I knew I could just run over to a heal zone or possibly a speed zone to escape if I needed to, although right now it just seems like I end up dying a lot more often. Along with the new buffs, there are also about a dozen new items in the store to help beef up your champion.

Another new addition to Dominion are the dynamic quests your team will receive throughout the match. These missions are all basically the same, you’re given a hold point to conquer and if you do, you receive some rewards in the way of XP and money. So if you want to out level your opponents, you’ll want to complete all the quests your team is given.

It seems RiotGames can do no wrong as Dominion is an instant hit. Matches are fast and furious taking only about 15-20 min to complete and are a blast to play. As soon a one match is finished I couldn’t wait for the next to being. If you’re still one of the few that hasn’t given League of Legends a try, do yourself a favor and download it today.
